DynamicLights
No more stumbling through the dark, jamming a torch into the wall every few blocks. When you hold a light source — a torch, lantern, glowstone, jack-o-lantern or an end rod — the area lights up right where you stand and the light follows you smoothly as you walk. It works purely server-side through light packets, so you install nothing and even players on a plain vanilla client see it; the world itself is never touched and no blocks are placed. It lights not only what's in your main or off hand but what you wear on your head too — pop a jack-o-lantern on your head and you've got a hands-free lamp. Dropped glowing items on the ground glow as well, and so do some mobs carrying a torch or wearing a pumpkin (zombies, skeletons, piglins…), so caves feel alive. On our server it's on across the whole world with a soft light edge, so it slides nicely as you move instead of popping.
How to use
- 1Nothing to install — it works for everyone, even on a plain vanilla client.
- 2Hold a light source (torch, lantern, glowstone, jack-o-lantern, end rod…) → the area lights up and the light follows you.
- 3Want light hands-free? Put a jack-o-lantern (or another glowing block) on your head — the helmet slot works too.
- 4The light works underwater too, so you can dive with a lantern in hand and actually see.
- 5Don't want dynamic light? Turn it off for yourself with /dl toggle; /dl status shows your current state.
Only what you hold in your main hand, off-hand or on your head glows — a torch tucked in your inventory does nothing. And because a vanilla client only understands whole-block light, it steps a little as you move fast; anyone who wants perfectly smooth light can (optionally) add a client mod like LambDynamicLights.
